A while back, I asked you to complete a survey about life as a working mom. Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete the survey. The results were interesting and now it’s time to share some of those survey results with you.
Did you know that 71% said that they work 41-50 hours/week? We’re not talking simply working moms; we’re talking full-time working moms!

While the vast majority of you are spending 32-40% of your awake time working (and that doesn’t include commute time), only 60% of you are getting the chance to spend more than 31 hours/week with your children and only 0-10 hours/week with your spouse. Using these stats, we can assume that the average working mom’s time is spent on the following:
- 32-40% at work
- 4% driving to/from work (assuming 1 hour round trip)
- 0-8% with spouse/significant other (alone)
- 24% with children/family

That’s 60-76% of our time already accounted for! So what are we doing with the remaining 24-40% of our awake time (assuming the vast majority of working moms sleep six hours/night—that would have made a great survey question!)? We’re getting everyone ready for the day, attending family/friend gatherings, cooking/cleaning, running errands, exercising and trying to find some resemblance of sanity. This is the life of a working mom.
And yet, only 43% are happy with this work/life balance.

So what do we do with this information? We can take comfort in knowing we’re not alone, no matter where in the spectrum of things we fall. No mom’s life is identical to another. We each have our own nuances that make our personal lives unique. So there is no overarching “solution” for each family. We each have to find a balance that works for us. And if we’re not happy with the balance, we need to try new things that may help.
Stay tuned for other posts that share some comments submitted by YOU on this survey too (i.e., tips and tricks to help get through the day).
